McCain Lies about Missed Energy Votes

A reporter pushing McCain on his missed energy votes:

WALTER ISAACSON: [...] Tom Friedman's column mentioned that you haven't been there supporting the tax breaks that need to be extended for wind and solar. Do you support those breaks, and will you keep pushing for--will you push for it at some point?

JOHN MCCAIN: Yes, and I have, and I have a long record of that support of alternate energy. [...] I've always been for all of those and I have not missed any crucial vote. But my citizens in Arizona know that when I'm running for the President of the United States I have to be out campaigning. But I of course I am for renewable energy

This is a lie. Friedman's column shows that McCain missed every vote on Energy in 2007.

[McCain said at a] motorcycle rally that Congress needed to come back from vacation immediately and do something about America's energy crisis. "Tell them to come back and get to work!" McCain bellowed.

Sorry, but I can't let that one go by. McCain knows why.

It was only five days earlier, July 30, that the Senate was voting for the eighth time in the past year on a broad, vitally important bill -- S. 3335 -- that would have extended the investment tax credits for installing solar energy and the production tax credits for building wind turbines and other energy-efficiency systems.

Both the wind and solar industries depend on these credits -- which expire in December -- to scale their businesses and become competitive with coal, oil and natural gas. Unlike offshore drilling, these credits could have an immediate impact on America's energy profile.

McCain did not show up for the crucial vote July 30, and the renewable energy bill was defeated for the eighth time. In fact, McCain has a perfect record on this renewable energy legislation. He has missed all eight votes over the past year -- which effectively counts as a "no" vote each time. Once, he was even in the Senate and wouldn't leave his office to vote.

Despite that, a McCain campaign commercial running during the Olympics shows a bunch of spinning wind turbines -- the very wind turbines that he would not cast a vote to subsidize, even though he supports big subsidies for nuclear power.

If these missed votes become a significant line of attack from Obama I'm sure we'll learn that it's fine because he was a POW.

If you had been paying attention for the last six years like a crazy person, you too would know that McCain may have been an occasional critic of the war in Iraq, but that it amounted to more of a hedged bet than actual opposition. It seemed that every time it might have made a difference, John McCain was completely on-board with Bush's message on Iraq.

McCain Forgetful or Something Else?

McCain's episodes of forgetfulness keep occurring at a regular rate :

2: Had forgotten he had said he wasn't an expert on the economy:


3: Thought he had walked freely through a Bagdhad market without body armor, while, in fact, he looked like this and was surrounded by hundreds of American Soldiers and three Apaches:

4: Thought Petraeus had told him that he went around Baghdad in an unarmored Humvee. (There's video for this, too, and for just about all these other screw-ups, but that would result in the longest post ever, so I'll refrain. YouTube has ample documentation of all this stuff.)

5: Denied strongly that he had criticized the media in his Cottage Cheese/Lime Jello Speech, and in fact that he had personally struck out that particular line - when he had, in fact, delivered that line. Forgetful? Or something else?

6: Saying he had voted for every Katrina investigation, when he had voted against 2 of them for sure, and more if you look at amendments.

7: He thought we were back down to pre-Surge troop levels, when we aren't even close. And McCain says Obama isn't in touch with the military.

8: He thinks Iran, a Shiite country, is training and arming Al Qaeda, a Sunni group. He was corrected by Lieberman, then got Sunni and Shiite confused again the next day.

9: He said the Sunni and Shiite didn't have a long history of violence against each other.

10: He said he didn't think we could stay in Iraq indefinitely because of the nature of the culture over there. An occupation is untenable - that we would always have casualties. Now he says we could be there for 100 years without human cost.

11: He's been confused about Gen Petraeus' chain of command. Petraeus only makes decisions about Iraq, not the entire Theater.

12: Proposes a Cap-and-Trade system, but doesn't understand that there is a cap involved.

It's not quote mandatory caps. It's cap-and-trade, OK. It's not mandatory caps to start with. It's cap-and-trade. That's very different. OK, because that's a gradual reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions. So please portray it as cap-and-trade. That's the way I call it.

What is the most generous interpretation of these events? That he's very forgetful.
