Not Enough Credit to Bush for OBL?

I had a discussion with a conservative friend, and he made the point that Obama lied by ommission by stating that he had ordered the CIA to begin an intensive search for Bin Laden, since "Bush's CIA never stopped looking! He made it sound like it was all Obama!"

Sorry Jim:
The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.

The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.
Bush was a quitter, for whom Bin Laden "really wasn't a high priority," who Bush "didn't think about much."

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Per the New York Times, the disbandment of the Alec Station wasn't because the CIA stopped looking for Osama, the units resources were reassigned to CIA units working on Al Queda as a whole, which makes more sense. See, the Alec Station was formed pre 911, before Al Queda was indentified as a major threat. After 911 the unit became redundant with other CIA units that had a broader mission statement. So, the CIA never stopped looking for osama (I mean, really, you believed this? that the CIA stopped looking for him? Really?), just streamlined its effort.

In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value. If there were, the government would have to make its holding illegal, as was done in the case of gold. ........ The financial policy of the welfare state requires that there be no way for the owners of wealth to protect themselves. This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists' tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists' antagonism toward the gold standard.

See if you can guess who said this :)

I would have guessed that it was an opponent back when it was being passed, but instead it's a dude that said this:

A long-time cheerleader for deregulation, Greenspan admitted to a congressional committee yesterday that he had been "partially wrong" in his hands-off approach towards the banking industry and that the credit crunch had left him in a state of shocked disbelief. "I have found a flaw," said Greenspan, referring to his economic philosophy. "I don't know how significant or permanent it is. But I have been very distressed by that fact."

Hehe.

Very interesting that you mentioned greenspans involvement in the current fiscal problems facing the country. After all, discrediting the one who states the idea is much easier than debunking the idea itself. In fact I planned that you would do just that and had my rebutal all waiting, cause i'm that kind of guy :) Greenspan started his career as an adherant to the "Austrian School" of economics. Thats when he said the posted quote - early in his career. However, he changed to the more prevailing theories about the fed and monetary policy, screwed things up, and in the end proved the points he believed when he was young.

The current fiscal crisis isn't done being played out yet. I fear we will find that the massive amount of money the fed has printed will be inflationary and damaging to the wealth of us all.

Sorry i missed your call, but i would like to respond...

As long as you look at republicans as evil vermin, dripping venom from their teeth, pushing old ladies over cliffs and so forth, while viewing democrats as angelic beings, bursting with goodness as they fly around with butterflies and unicorns, you will not understand what is going on in washington.

At this time both sides have completely stonewalled the entire process of trimming the budget, pandering to the more extreme elements of their party. That should be completely obvious. I could go on about how the democrats refuse to give an inch (reference pelosi's most recent remarks)or how they don't even have a plan. None. I could acknowledge how Obama makes speeches yet can not be cornered on anything but tax increases and cutting the military budget (didn't the head of the CBO say "i can't rate speeches"? doesn't that say just about everything?) But it wouldn't change the facts that we have buried ourselves in a mess and it seems no one has courage.

There are way to may facets of the debate to cover here, but i have to say nothing going on in DC makes me comfortable.
